The academic program at Montrose Christian Montessori School follows the Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. There are five basic areas to the classroom:
- Practical Life
- Sensorial
- Math
- Language
- Cultural Subjects
Preschool
The MCMS preschool program is based on the individual approach to the whole child, which includes physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and academic development. MCMS uses didactic materials and encourages a hands-on concrete approach. A personal relationship with each child is critical.
Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten
Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) and Kindergarten both stress the same goals as the preschool program, with an added introduction to writing. This is still a concrete approach and workbook/paperwork is added with moderation. The goal is to establish an absolute love of learning for each child.
Elementary
Elementary builds onto the beginning foundations by adding subject areas, including:
- Math, Language
- Grammar, Geography
- History
- Botany/Science
- Zoology/Anatomy
Concrete lessons slowly progress to abstraction. Our first grade readers have transitioned from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." At the elementary level there is the introduction of the basal text which provides for some traditional exposure. All children progress at their own pace and often the program is tailor-made to fit each child.
Elementary students receive nightly homework assignments that reflect what has already been covered in class. The amount of time and effort required to complete these assignments are commensurate with the level of each student’s ability. Some home assignments include monthly project work, which requires the student to research and prepare a more comprehensive and lengthy presentation.
